Central DuPage Hospital
Winfield, Illinois

Open since 1964, Central DuPage Hospital offers comprehensive medical and surgical services to communities in Chicago’s western suburbs. The hospital is part of an interdependent network of healthcare organizations and services, including convenient care centers, occupational health services, home health and hospice care. Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) is committed to its goal of promoting the health and well-being of the community it serves.
A multi-year renovation and expansion project is scheduled for the hospital that will redefine the look and feel of the campus and create a more efficient facility for patients, visitors and staff. Recently a new Pediatric Short Stay (PSS) unit was built. PSS is intended for children requiring less than 24 hours of inpatient medical care; it contains seven private suites which each include a bathroom, sleeping accommodations for parents, plasma televisions and DVD players.“We were able to create a design that uses color, light and shape to define a youthful environment rather than typical theme-like spaces,” said Margi Kaminski, interior designer for RTKL. “Each sweeping design element leads into the next, creating an experience that is uplifting for young patients during their brief stay at the hospital.”
Other details of the new design include a fiber optic “star-lit” ceiling that greets the new visitor, a wave of “bubble” glass tile leads down the corridor and a curved glass wall invites the on-looker to peer inside a play room. The design is punctuated by bold use of color and circular shapes on soffits, walls and floors.
“The design is timeless, not gender or age specific and combines cutting-edge design with excellence in pediatric care for this specialty unit,” adds Kaminski.

Why Azrock?
When the Pediatric Short Stay unit at Central DuPage Hospital was constructed during the fall of 2009, the hospital wanted to provide a cheerful and inviting environment without appearing too juvenile since its patients’ ages range from newborn to eighteen years. Azrock’s Cortina Grande commercial resilient tile offered the design flexibility to create interesting designs and a wide range of color options to provide the desired aesthetics. Plus, its reduced maintenance qualities and superior performance warranty met the facility’s needs within budget.

About Azrock Cortina Grande
Composed primarily of limestone, Cortina Grande commercial resilient tile is a product in the Azrock Achieve Solid Vinyl Tile category. The tile features a non-directional pattern in a homogeneous construction, meaning the pattern distributes through the thickness of each tile. Available in 26 color options, Cortina Grande is a 16” x 16” tile that can be custom-cut into shapes and further customized with grout and a choice of three surface treatments. Azrock's highest rated product line, Achieve Solid Vinyl Tile, offers minimal maintenance with dry buffing, superior performance with 800 PSI as well as 10-year manufacturer, moisture and wear warranty when installed with Spray Smart adhesive.

About Azrock by Tarkett’s Partnership with RTKL – Chicago
During the spring of 2006, Azrock’s Cortina Grande was installed in the Women & Children’s Pavilion of CDH and was liked so much that they have chosen to carry on the theme for their pediatric units within the hospital. In fact, CDH already contains over 18,500 square feet of Azrock flooring on its campus. The next phase to install Azrock Cortina Grande is the CDH Medical Office Building.
RTKL’s Chicago office continues to be pleased with the look and performance of Azrock’s Cortina Grande tile. The product’s design flexibility, color range and reduced maintenance qualities provide the right flooring solution for CDH. In fact, RTKL, Azrock by Tarkett and Mr. David’s Flooring International recently received Starnet’s Grand Prize Crystal Award 2010 for best overall design.
